I talked to one lady here in Kyiv. Before coming here she spent several years working in Africa for UNICEF. She is pediatrician by proffesion. She said her dream has always been to work with children. She has decided to join UNICEF instead of working as a doctor in her home country. She said that although she still has the need to help children and work with them, if she knew then what she knows now, she would never pick the path to work for UNICEF. I think the reason is that the work, no matter how helpful it may seem, is simply still too far away from the field, too far away from what actually happens and in this case too far from children... I guess the role of UN is more like technical assistance, maybe advocacy etc. ... so they are as if the back stage... but the question is how much bureaucracy is there which is actually needed...
